Dealing with diesel emissions at source
Diesel engines are a valuable power source for underground
mining but their emissions can be a disadvantage.
These emissions are best dealt with at source through
the use of exhaust treatment. The need to reduce particulate
engines from mining machines is most pressing, driven
by new regulations and an increasing understanding
of detrimental health effects of exposure to fine
particles.
The best solution for particulate emissions reduction
is particulate filters.
Platinum-catalysed DPF systems are usually not considered
suitable for underground. However, other systems such
as the DPFi
system have been successfully employed in mining.
Johnson Matthey is currently developing new passively
regenerating DPF systems that are suitable for underground
mining.
